Young Robert: He tiptoed into the kitchen and stuffed his mouth full of honey comb. The cook caught him and she hollered, “I told you I would get you good for stealing the table honey.”

Robert took off in a run. He dodged a broom flying at his head, leaped into the saddle, and nudged his horse into a gallop.

Middle Aged Robert: “They will not like Thy servant Robert Sheffey for asking You this at so late an hour. But, Lord, come quickly, like a descending dove. Forgive them, Lord, for their stiff shirt collars and brand-new suits make it hard for them to look down from the pulpit to see if anyone stands at the altar. Forgive them, Lord, they are small potatoes and very few in the hill . . .”

The service continued by lamplight. At almost midnight, Robert took his arm from around the shoulders of the last person who sat upon the bench. And at last a joyful calm came upon Robert’s heart.

Elderly Robert: “Do you tell an old man that his time has come and gone? And that he doesn’t use the sense the sweet Lord gave him to hear it?”

His preacher friend drew his arm around Robert’s shoulder. He spoke in a near whisper. “Your voice will be heard and loved as long as you can speak, Brother Bob. I am among those who thank God for your voice, and pray that it may never die.”
