Top Five Breeds of Ducks

We will look into the top five duck breeds which are best for the homesteader, micro farm or simple backyard.

#5 Pekin: Friendly and curious and produce extra large eggs around six months of age. We own Pekins and I can attest to their somewhat friendly manner & Daffy’s eggs are still medium to large as she just started laying a month ago. I have received one extra large egg from her!

#4 Muscovy: They are quiet, lay multiple broods, and are loving and attentive parents.

#3 Runner Ducks: Runner Ducks cannot fly so no worry about them leaving the property, and are perfect ducks to keep your garden insect free. Excellent foragers and very independant. They are one of the lowest maintence ducks around.

#2 Silver Appleyard: These ducks are extremely calm and sociable. Not only are these ducks excellent layers but gorgeous to have strutting around your backyard or farm.

#1 Cayuga Duck: They are considered the best family pet as they enjoy hugs and snuggles. They are an amazing colorful of shiny medium and dark blues. This duck reminds me of the peacock in beauty. Their eggs are black at first and slowly become lighter throughout the laying season. The Cayuga is the hardest domesticated ducks available.

Here’s my opinion. If I were to enlarge my flock of my pair of Pekin ducks, I would want a few of each of these to add to my flock. And I would probably choose to have a Muscovey male to go with the female since they are good parents. Also, I’ve found in research the Muscovey is the top meat production of the world and the second is the Pekin.

Until next time where I’d like to discuss the silly antics of ducks versus chickens on our Fowl Play Farm.
