Donald the Duck Surives
It has been months since Donald sustained a preditor injury. As the swelling on his leg lessened, it was plain to see his bone was broken. I’m truly grateful the bone did not break the skin, otherwise he wouldn’t have lived.
This injury before winter has been challenging in keeping Donald warm enough because his lessened mobility can’t keep his temperature up. Once after a rain storm, I checked on the ducks and Donald was soaked and shivering from lying against their wire pen door. I wrapped him in towels and set him before the wood stove. Another time he became soaked from Daffy splashing in the pool. He was shivering when I found him. More towels. More wood heat and all is well. Except I took that pool out of the pen which gives them more room. Daffy still swims daily but only when I let them out several times a day.
As we’ve had a few warm days, Donald has been playing in the pool. He still shivers some but a good towel wrap and the warmth of my arms and he is good to go. You should have seen him play with Daffy. They were splashing and swirling and communicating in their duck voices. They bobbed their heads at each other with a quack quack here and a quack quack there. And I’m smiling like goofy!

As seen in the above photo, Donald likes to lay sideways on an incline to take pressure off his damaged leg. So he sometimes gets stuck and can’t reach his water and food. I make sure it is in front of him so he doesn’t go more than an hour without both.
I hope Donald can gain more mobility so he can waddle even if it is with a limp. One thing that has really helped is the bee venom cream I put on his leg twice daily. He’s learned that the cream makes him hurt less, and he stays still in my arms most of the time when I apply it on his leg.
As the weather turns warmer, Donald will once again take his daily swims with Daffy and all will be well in the duck kingdom at Fowl Play Farm!
