Donald the Duck
Donald duck is having a hard time and has been for three weeks. He was bitten by a preditor and his leg is infected. We have since added a night solar light and blocked the area where the preditor got to Donald. I believe the solar light is keeping the preditor away as I have not seen any sign of the preditors’ attempt to get inside the pen again.
I miss Donald running circles around my feet and his nibbles at my toes. And I almost lost him three times. This last time he quit eating and it came to me that he needed protein but he wouldn’t eat his dried grubs. Then I thought of earth worms. And yes, Donald gobbles them down and he eats his grain once again. I’m out there by their pen digging up worms four times a day but Donald is thriving.
He has lost weight but he’s also holding in his body heat once again. Twice I brought him wrapped in a towel to lay by the woodstove. That always works. And doctoring his leg with Collodial Silver has lessned the swelling.
I let the ducks out as often as I can when it is not raining. One time I was filling up the ducks water pails. The ducks began quacking and the rogue rooster [who stays out of the hen pen otherwise the head rooster will beat him up] was clucking. The noise sounded like their were headed to the gate to the backyard. Yep! I thought I was watching a movie. All three hurried to the gate and Donald used his wings like a crutch. I laughed out loud.
You see the ducks daytime pen is in our backyard. But is not covered well against our rain storms so they have been spending much of their time in the night time pen.
I’m so grateful that Donald is still with us here on the Fowl Play Farm.
